A quarter century of Northwest Arkansas landscapes
The Grey Barn has been designing, installing, and maintaining landscapes across Northwest Arkansas since 2001. In that time the region has changed almost beyond recognition. Springdale, Rogers, Fayetteville, and Bentonville have grown from towns into a corridor, and a lot of ground we once mowed is now under buildings.
What has not changed is the ground itself. Northwest Arkansas sits on red clay over limestone and sandstone in USDA Zone 7a, with hot humid summers, real winter freezes, and terrain that sends water exactly where you do not want it. Twenty-five years of working that soil is the difference between a landscape that looks good in the photos and one that still looks good in year five.
Ownership and leadership
Calvin acquired the business in 2026, taking on an established company with its crews, its client relationships, and two decades of local knowledge already in place. That continuity mattered to him. The people who knew which slopes flood and which clients want their beds edged a particular way stayed, and the work carried on.
What Calvin brought was more than 20 years in business management and customer service. His focus has been on the parts of contracting that customers feel but rarely see: crews that show up when they said they would, estimates that hold, safety standards that protect the people doing the work, and someone who answers the phone.
A proud Arkansas native, Calvin grew up with an appreciation for the outdoors that turned into a career building them. He is married to Summer Smith. Outside of work he spends his time outdoors, thinking about landscape design, and supporting the local community.
Credentials that matter
Anyone can buy a mower.
These are the qualifications we hold, and each one exists because it changes the work:
- Certified Irrigation Auditor. Irrigation is where commercial properties quietly lose the most money, through coverage failures and schedules nobody has adjusted since installation. Auditing is a discipline, not a guess.
- ICPI Certified Paver Installer. The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute certification covers base preparation and drainage, which is what determines whether a patio is still level in ten years.
- Licensed and insured contractor. Required for the structural, electrical, and gas work involved in outdoor living builds.
Where we work
We serve Springdale, Fayetteville, Rogers, Bentonville, Bella Vista, Lowell, Cave Springs, Siloam Springs, and the surrounding communities across Washington and Benton counties.
Being local is not a marketing line here. It means we know which municipalities require what in a landscape plan, which soils drain and which do not, and how late a spring frost can arrive in the Ozarks compared with central Arkansas.
How we work
We look before we quote. Every proposal starts with someone walking the property. Sun, drainage, grade, soil, and how you actually use the space all change the plan.
We put it in writing. Vague scopes cause arguments in July. Our proposals name what is included so you can compare bids honestly, whether or not you choose us.
We build for year five. Proper base preparation, correct planting depth, real drainage, and plants suited to Zone 7a clay. None of it shows up in the first photo. All of it shows up later.
We stay. Most of our work comes from clients we have had for years and from people they told. In a region this size, that is the only reputation worth having.
